DESCENDANTS OF MARTTIN TRAPP

By Ann Jobe Brown & D. Mitchell Jones

                                                                  GENERATION ONE

1. MARTIN1TRAPP, b ca 1724-1726 probably VA d probably VA or KY m Mary ______. Martin first appears on tithables list of Orange Co., VA in 1739. To be a tithable male had to be 16 year of age. Probably Martin older than 15 as he is listed by name. Discussion with Barbara Vines Little, abstractor of Orange Co., VA tithables and editor of Magazine of Virginia Genealogy, several years ago about possibility of Martin Trapp being German. She states that on "A" List which Martin was on was people from eastern parts of Virginia. I checked about Martin also being German with Germanna Society that was formed to honor the German settlers in the Germanna Colony in bordering Spotsylvania Co., VA. No Trapp was a member of the Germanna Colony.

Characteristics of Martin Trapp is that he was always on frontier and seemed to be at the time he is found in Orange Co., VA familiar with frontier life. I suspect he was 2nd or 3rd generation of his family in America as he had completed the great learning process of being able to live on frontier. See Seedtime on Cumberland and discussion of great learning.(DMJ) There were other Trapp families in eastern counties of Virginia from which Martin probably descended.

4.
JOHN3 TRAPP, (MARTIN2, MARTIN1), was born 1776 in Virginia, and died Aft. 1853 in Jackson Co, Tennessee. He married (1) NANCY DODSON August 28, 1800 in Pulaski Co, Kentucky, daughter of WILLIAM DODSON and SARAH BARRON. She was born Abt. 1780, and died in Tennessee. He married (2) MARY ? Aft. 1815.
From Thomas G. Webb, DeKalb Co., TN Historian
By 1818 the Holmes’ Creek Baptist Church had been established on the lower end of Holmes’ Creek, and the McGinnis, Hayes and Atnip families were attending it. John Trapp is thought to have been living several miles away in Jackson Co., TN, but he was a strong Baptist and attended the meeting of the Baptist association. The church then served both religious and social functions, and church services were many young couples met and began their courtship. Job and John Trapp are said to have met Susan and Mary McGinnis while attending a meeting of the Baptist association at Holmes’ Creek. The Trapps, McGinnises, Allens, and the other families remained in the church for a hundred years or more. The Holmes Creek Church, when it was established, held beliefs much like those of the other Baptist churches. However, as the missionary controversy developed and Calvinistic beliefs fell from favor, the Holmes’ Creek Church held to its early beliefs. This was the basic Calvinistic doctrine that all men are predestined before birth to go to haven or to go to hell, and that they can do nothing about it. Following this line of reasoning. They believed missions to be not only unnecessary, but to be presumptuous on God’s sovereignty. Eventually most of the Baptist churches moved into missionary activity and away from the idea of predestination, but the Holmes’ Creek Church and other churches in the Caney Fork Association held firmly to predestination. By the time the church property was taken for Center Hill Reservoir in the 1940’s, there were only a few members left.

Wm. Meredith was appointed Justice of the Peace, and J. H. C. Hopewell, Constable. The first settler in the township was Dr. James Noble, who located his claim where the city of Oskaloosa now stands, early in the year 1855. During that year many more settlers located and opened farms. Among the first settlers who remained and contributed and most to develop the township were: James and Thomas H. Noble, Terry Trapp, N. B. and J. H. C. Hopewell, J. H. Rickman, E. and Jacob Faubion, H. O. Finch, Jno. Jeffries, Wm. Meredith and George and Conrad Schuster.

14. JOHN4 TRAPP
, (John3, Martin2, Martin1), b. 1809, White Co, Tennessee; d. July 1881 DeKalb Co., TN. He married SUSAN MCGINNIS Abt. 1832, daughter of RICHARD MCGINNIS and ELIZABETH HAYES. She was born 1814 in Smith Co., Tennessee. From Thomas G. Webb, DeKalb Co., TN Historian- John Trapp is said to have met Susan at a Baptist association meeting at the Holmes’ Creek Baptist Church where she attended. At the time John lived in Jackson Co., TN. Since Susan McGinnis was a sister of Mary McGinnis that married Jobe Trapp their children were double first cousins. In naming their children they used some of the same names. The home of John and Susan for most of their married life was in Wildcat Hollow on the Caney Fork River between Indian Creek and Cove Hollow, in DeKalb Co., TN’s, 15th District. One disadvantage of this location was its distance from the Holmes’ Creek Baptist Church about four miles. Of course church was only held one Sunday a month, but rain or extremely cold weather made it difficult for the family to attend. Sometimes they only attened a few times during the year, but they always managed to get to the annual footwashing, held during warm weather. John and Susan’s home was also about a mile and half from the nearest school, but the censuses of both 1850 and 1860 indicate that all of the Trapp children attended school. In 1860, John’s half brother Jasper M. Trapp, age 22, was living with the family; his occupation was listed as School Teacher. Later generations had still more school teachers. John and Susan’s grandchildren Fantley and Lilly Trapp were school teachers. Another grandson, Pate Page, had several children and grandchildren who were and are school teachers.

John’s farm was on the Caney Fork River, but it had very little river bottom land. Beside the river bluff, under which was a dry cave where Indians had once lived; the smoke from their fires had blacked the cave’s ceiling. The land was fertile, but practically all of it was hillside land. This was no disadvantage then; oxen or mules worked about as well on hillsides as they did on level land. For his homeplace, John chose a little ridge overlooking Wildcat Hollow and the Caney Fork River, with the taller hills rising behind it. The house and barn sat on this ridge; below it were the garden and a cornfield; below these was the cemetery whre John, Susan, and several other family members were buried. The house in the beginnning was one big log room with a loft above where the children slept. Gradually more rooms were added over the years. The house stood until 1923, when Fantley Trapp tore it down to build a new house.  Still in the house at that time were the old loom, spinning wheels, and necessary equipment for spinning and weaving cloth. They had been used by Susan and by later generations. Even in 1923 they were taken by Fantley’s brother Jeff; several DeKalb County families were still spinning and weaving their own wool blankets during the Depression of the 1930’s.

When the land along the Caney Fork was taken for Center Hill Reservoir in the 1940’s the Trapp farm was still in the family. About 180 acres were owned by Fantley Trapp’s widow and heirs at that time. The farm had come down through Richard McGinnis "Mack" Trapp, John and Susan’s youngest child. The other two sons had died in the Confederate Army during the Civil War. Of John’s and Susan’s five daughters, apparently none had children but Amanda Page and Rebecca Bonham. In 1880, John Trapp was living with his unmarried daughter, Mary; John’s son Mack and family were living in the next household. John died about July 1881 and was buried in the Trapp Cemetery below his home, beside his wife Susan whi had died a few years earlier. In the 1940’s this cemetery was removed to the Mount Holly Cemetery north of Smithville, along with the other cemeteries from the Center Hill Reservoir.

Notes for JOHN TRAPP:  Middle name may be Thomas as appears this way in research of some Trapp researchers. This seems to be a recent addition since advent of internet as I have never seen it in the official records, and I know of know Bible record showing a middle name.
