1840- October 5 - DeKalb Co, Tennessee DeKalb Co, TN Deed Book B, page 219

Deed from Richard McGinnis to Benjamin Atnip. The deed states that Richard, for the love and affection he entertains for Benjamin Atnip, conveys to Benjamin's heirs three acres of land on Holmes Creek. (Note: In a farming community land was the most important possession of a man, and for him to give it away there must be a family relationship. The deed is another indication that Benjamin's first wife was the daughter of Alexander McGinnis, as Alexander was the father of Richard Mcginnis.)

The following was taken from an article that was written by Thomas G. Webb, Dekaib County Historian, in June 1995.
The McGinnis Family of Dekaib County Tennessee 1720-1860

William McGinnis was born Ca. 1720, possibly in Ireland. He was married to Elizabeth ? by 1743, when they sold land in Goochland Co. (Deed book 4, p 295). On Mar. 12, 1740, William Meginnes patented 400 acres in Goochland on Cat Branch of Willis River, now in Buckingham and Cumberland counties. ("Cavaliers and Pioneers", Vol. 4, p. 211, Hudgins, 1994) In 1748 William is listed in the vestry book of Antrim parish, Lunenberg County, Va. On July 15, 1749, William McGinnis patented 231 acres on both sides of Difficult Creek in Lunenberg (now Halifax) county. (Magazine of Virginia Genealogy, Aug. 1991, p. 175) By 1761 William is deceased; the inventory of this estate is in Halifax Co., Va. His wife Elizabeth appparently died about the same time; the accounts mention making a coffin for Elizabeth McGinnis. In 1769 Alexander McGinnis and Wm. Green were administrators of the Wm. McGinnis estate, which was to have the balance divided among the 8 orphans. Definitely established as sons of William McGinnis are William McGinnis Jr., and Alexander McGinnis. William Jr. was evidently the oldest, probably born about 1743. In 1764 he sold land patented in 1749 by "William McGinness father of sd Wm." (Halifax Co., VA deed book 6, p. 138) Other possible sons are Andrew McGinnis (Revolutionary War soldier) and James McGinnis, both in the Halifax Co., VA 1787 tax list, and John McGinnis, who is in the 1782 Frederick Co., VA tax list and also in the tax lists for Pulaski Co. KY from 1800 through 1809. ...
