Shanks, who operated the store in western Putnam Co., TN for 65 years, always gave candy and fruit to the children who visited. Beside him on the counter, at left, is a metal matchbox, where he stacked all his matches "to keep the mice out," and, at right, a large scale that determined the price of his goods.
