He married LAVINIA DILL in South Carolina, daughter of JOSEPH DILL and NANCY Unknown (Nancy may have been a Loftis, and some researchers say she was a Parker..

Joab HALE (HAILE) was born in Greenville, South Carolina between 1750 and 1760 and in 1790 was living in Greenville Co., South Carolina. Married Lavina DILL in South Carolina. Moved his family with the DILL family to Smith Co Tennessee about 1800 and was living in Cove Hollow on Caney Fork in 1808. This was then Smith Co. He was in Cove Hollow in 1817 but bought land on Smith Fork in 1823. He lived around Helton and Dismal Creeks and died there in Sep 1843. Three children were mentioned in his will: Sintha DRIVER; Lavina TRAMMEL; and John HALE. A daughter, Mary TAYLOR, was given land in Cove Hollow in 1833. Thomas TRAMMEL and John HALE were executors of the will.

1814-8 Dec Joab Hale of Smith Co State of Tenn for $150.00 paid by William L. Dill of Greenville Dist SC land Beaverdam Creek branch of Middle Tyger River. Beg Black gum S side Beaverdam Creek Richard Henson & Streats corner S40W28.50 S10E12chains Spanish Oak S70E23Chains R Oak N45E35C Chesnut Mr henson corner with his line to begin. 130A being NW end survey made for James Stephens 1787 for 260A 8 Dec 1814. Joab (X) Hale Wit Solomon Dill Willey L. Brown. Soloman Dill before Absalom Thompson JP 18 July 1815. Recorded 1 Apr 1816. Greenville, SC Deed I 486. (Note I can not find where Joab purchased this land.

1819-16 Aug Joseph Dill Sr made will. Wife Nancy; son John. After wife's death to be equally divided among all his childre. Wit Alex Jordan, Lavina Hale, Wm Jordan. Exs son Nimrod Dill; Joab Hale. Smith Co., TN Wills probate Nov 1819.
