Yesterday’s Downtown

Walter Carlen, a resident of Cookeville who died in 1972, talked with Carolyn Whitson of Cookeville some years ago about his rememberances of how the town looked in 1882. Based on his recollections, this map was drawn by Mrs. Whitson as a student project during her years at Tennessee Tech. She’s now the coordinator of the Media Center in TTU’s library. Carlen, the son of the late James A. and Minerva Tennessee Huddleston Carlen, was Clerk and Master in the Putnam Courthouse and also served as president of the Coca-Cola bottling plant here. His daughter, Mrs. Philip Webb, lives in Cookeville.
