Joseph Francis and Mary (Stephens) Scott

Joseph Francis Scott & his wife Mary Elizabeth Stephens.

In 1890, Joe Scott as he was known, began his lifetime profession as a builder/contractors. In 1900, he completed the county courthouse for Putnam Co., declared one of the most beautiful public buildings in this section of the state. He was instrumental in building more brick and public structures than any man at that time. Most of the brick and public structures of Putnam Co. came from his own brick yard. His first brickyard was built near the old Putnam Co. fair grounds. In 1894 he bought 15 or 16 acres for $450 and built the last brick yard. This was where Rose's shopping center now is. The brick was first hand pressed, later the bricks were wire cut. In 1911 he contracted to build the University of Dixie College.
